May 30, 2018 · Oil leaks in your BMW are usually due to one of these valves or seals wearing out; however, leaks can also occur due to simple errors such as not tightening the oil cap enough or plugging the oil pan gasket firmly after an oil change. The latter is a common cause of lower engine area oil leaks. The drain plug is a 8 mm hex, however if bolt is stripped out as mine was, you'll have to drive something else up in there. I used a T-50 Torx to get the plug out. There is a hex in the bottom of the filter housing, this does NOT need to be removed to get the filter out. It is size 6 mm hex. I used an oil filter wrench to get the filter off ... Understood. The service manual, on initial skim, shows the rear plug below the scavenge pump. I was doing my first oil change, at 130 miles, to be safe. The rear plug took some getting out, and the threads stripped when I managed to get it back in (with a new crush washer). Dealer 250 miles away, through 120 degree California central valley.

Where you plug in the socket, use the wrench to loosen the plug in a counterclockwise direction. Once relaxed, you can use your hand and remove the plug. The hot oil will begin to pour out.
